HOUSTON - The University of Houston tennis team rolled past Louisville by a score of 6-1 to wrap up the regular season Saturday afternoon at John E. Hoff Courts. The Cougars have won nine of their last 10 matches and will enter the 2011 Conference USA Championship with a 16-7 overall record.
"We're going to enjoy this win for a little while," said head coach John Severance. "The bracket for the conference tournament will come out on Tuesday, and we'll shift our focus to our opponent at that point."
The Cougars took the opening doubles point with two different combinations at the bottom two positions. Celia Fraser and Maja Kazimieruk teamed up for the first time this season, posting a dominating 8-3 victory over Gabrielle Duncan and Sarah Miller at the No. 3 position.
Giorgia Pozzan and Joanna Kacprzyk joined forces for the only the second time this spring, defeating Amelia Harris and Stefanie Villajuan by a score of 8-4 to clinch the opening point. The Houston tandem improved to 6-0 overall during the 2010-11 campaign, as the Cougars reeled off four wins together in the fall.
Kazimieruk opened singles play with a bang, blanking Duncan at the No. 5 spot to improve to 16-5 in dual play.
Pozzan put the Cougars up 3-1 in the match with a 6-4, 6-1 victory to push her record to 16-6 in her first spring season as a Cougar.
Bryony Hunter clinched Houston's 16th win of the season with a 7-5, 6-2 defeat of Rebecca Shine at the No. 2 position for her seventh-consecutive victory. Hunter broke Shine's serve to claim the first set, and did it once again, dominating the final game of the second set to seal the win.
Dionne Sanders extended her winning streak to 11 matches on Saturday with a 6-2, 6-2 rout of Sonia Bakhari at the bottom position to push her spring record to 13-6.
With only one match still underway, the attention shifted to senior Joanna Kacprzyk's final home match as a Cougar, as the Warsaw, Poland, native held on for a 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 victory over Harris to round out the scoring.
"I wanted nothing more than for Joanna to win her final home match," said Severance. "There is a ton of pressure to be able to do that, and she was able to prevail today."
