HOUSTON - The University of Houston won its fourth-straight game Saturday night at Cougar Field, knocking off Kent State 4-3 to take a 2-0 lead into the series finale Sunday afternoon.
The Cougars (11-9) got another strong performance from its pitching staff. Junior Jordan Lewis improved to 2-0, pitching 6.2 innings. He allowed three runs on seven hits with a career-high tying four strikeouts. Junior Jordan Mannisto came it to pitch the final 2.1 innings to earn the save. He gave up just one hit with one strikeout.
Kent State looked to even the series after falling in the opener on Friday night, as they jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the third inning. Houston, however, would quickly tie the score in the bottom of the inning when the Golden Flashes' attempt at a double play went bad. With the bases loaded, junior Matt Creel hit into a fielder's choice at second base but when the shortstop attempted to throw Creel out at first the ball went sailing over his teammates head, allowed two Cougar runs to score.
The two teams again matched scores in the fourth inning to tie the game 4-4. Joe Koch hit and RBI single up the middle to score a Kent State runner, while junior Jake Runte scored on freshman Landon Appling's RBI single through the left side.
The Cougars took the lead for good in the fifth inning when sophomore Chase Jensen hit a home run over the left field wall.
