NATCHITOCHES, La. - The University of Houston tennis team suffered a 6-1 setback at Northwestern State on Sunday morning to fall to 6-4 overall this season.
"We were playing shorthanded without Bryony (Hunter) in the lineup, but that's no excuse and people have to step up," said head coach John Severance. "We have to put this weekend behind us and try to get healthy. We have to get ready for the next seven matches on the road, which will all be indoors."
The top two doubles tandems for the Cougars fell as the Demons (4-1) claimed the opening point, while the Houston duo of Joanna Kacprzyk and Maja Kazimieruk salvaged the doubles portion with an 11-9 victory over Kathrin Lange and Adna Curukovic.
Kazimieruk scored the lone singles win for the Cougars, cruising past Lange at the No. 4 position by a score of 6-1, 6-0 to improve to 6-2 on the season.
Giorgia Pozzan and Kacprzyk both dropped hard-fought decisions in three sets, while Jo Garvey fell at the No. 6 position (7-5, 7-5) after having match points in each set.
The Cougars continue their nine-match road tilt on Thursday at UMKC, and follow with contests against Kansas State and Kansas on Friday and Saturday, respectively.
