HOUSTON - Roxana Button scored a game-high 22 points to lead the University of Houston to a 65-41 victory over the University of St. Thomas Monday night in an exhibition contest at Hofheinz Pavilion.
The Cougars played six freshmen in the victory and were without the services of preseason All-Conference USA selection Porsche Landry due to injury.
Houston got off to a slow start, trailing 7-0 almost four minutes into the contest before Button broke the ice with a jumper. The floodgates then opened, as Button and junior transfer Tasha Tubbs hit back-to-back-to-back 3-pointers to cap a 23-3 run in less than five minutes.
The Cougars held a 34-23 lead at the half, and the lead shrunk to just eight points with 13:15 remaining before Houston rode a 27-10 run over the remainder of the contest, thanks to a steady dose of Button and timely post play.
Button helped the Cougars keep a comfortable distance the entire night with big shots to kick start Houston rallies. The senior from Coppell, Texas, also collected eight rebounds, two assists and two steals in 36 minutes of action.
Tubbs also scored in double figures with 12 points in her first game in a Houston uniform. The Amarillo, Texas, native teamed up with Button for all four of Houston's long-range buckets.
Freshman forward Terran Alford enjoyed a productive night in her first contest at Houston, posting nine points, seven boards, three blocks and two steals in 22 minutes.
Sophomore Mae Woods was effective down the stretch, pouring on nine points and four rebounds, while freshman Amanda Lawson tallied seven points and a team-high nine boards in 30 minutes of play.
Houston improved on the glass as the game progressed, winning the rebound battle by a 56-45 margin, with 30 boards coming on the offensive end.
The Cougars turned the ball over 15 times, while forcing 28 turnovers to go with 11 steals and nine blocks.
Houston officially opens the season against New Mexico State at 7 p.m., Friday at Hofheinz Pavilion.
