HOUSTON - The University of Houston baseball team is in the middle of its 2011 fall baseball season but the coaching staff is already gearing up for three fall camps. The fall slate kicks off Oct. 23 and runs through Dec. 11 with camps for kids of all ages available.
On Oct. 23, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., the Cougar baseball team will hold the second annual Father/Son Camp at Cougar Field. The camp is for boys aged 6-12 and will cost $75. At the camp, the coaching staff will show father and son alike different drills and teaching points to take home and continue each camper's baseball development.
The Fall Showcase Camp will take place Nov. 12-13. From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., high school aged players, ages 14-18, will have the perfect opportunity to improve their skills and showcase their game to college coaches and professional scouts. The camp costs $220.
The Fall Showcase Camp is created specifically for high school players, giving them the opportunity to display their skills in a pro-style workout, defensive showcase, batting practice and live-game situations. Camp personnel will include the UH baseball staff as well as other college coaches and professional scouts. The camp is designed for the player who is serious about taking his game to the next level and who desires exposure to college coaches.
The fall camp schedule concludes Dec. 10-11 with the Winter Camp. The camp will include three sessions and is available for kids, ages 6-18. Campers will be broken up into two groups, the junior group (ages 6-12) and the senior group (ages 13-18). Attendance costs $105 for one session, $195 for two sessions and $250 for three sessions. The two days of camp will feature pitching and catching sessions, position play and hitting sessions.
At the pitching and catching sessions, participants will learn skills in a concentrated, skill-specific environment. College coaches and professional scouts will provide campers with expert instruction and evaluation. Campers will be coached through drills on the field and live bullpens.
During position play, each camper will receive high-level instruction in the position of his choice including infield and outfield play. Important fundamentals including throwing mechanics, footwork and other skills related to each position will be practiced.
The hitting session is designed to teach a variety of drills to develop proper swinging mechanics. Stance, stride, rotation and balance are just a few key topics that will be discussed and practiced. Video evaluation and strength and conditioning for hitters will also be taught.
