HOUSTON - Cougar fans made the trip downtown for University of Houston Night at Minute Maid Park Tuesday evening.
The Houston Astros offered UH faculty, staff and fans tickets to the game at nearly 50 percent off as part of the event, resulting in a large section of Cougar red in the ballpark.
Senior Case Keenum kicked off the Astros' 6-1 victory against the visiting Chicago Cubs when the Cougars' starting quarterback threw out the ceremonial first pitch. A crowd of 28,047 was on hand to watch the Conference USA Preseason Player of the Year fire a strike to home plate.
Keenum was honored as a favorite for both the College Football Performance Awards National Performer of the Year and the College Football Performance Awards Quarterback Trophy. In addition, the Abilene, Texas, native has been named to several Preseason All-America Teams.
Fittingly, UH Night at Minute Maid Park featured the Cougars new head baseball coach Todd Whitting. While attending the game, Whitting was interviewed by Fox Sports Houston for Cougar fans watching the telecast.
Whitting was named the eighth head coach in program history on July 2, starting his second tenure on the UH coaching staff. Prior to his former job as an assistant at TCU, Whitting served as an assistant at Houston. Astros' centerfielder Michael Bourn played all three of his collegiate seasons under Whitting.
Bourn still holds records at Houston as no other Cougar freshman has scored as many runs (55), taken as many walks (50) or stolen as many bases (35) as the current big leaguer.
