HOUSTON - A pair of University of Houston baseball players are beginning the final weeks of a successful summer in the Cape Cod League after earning a pair of honors.
Caleb Ramsey, who will begin his senior season at UH in 2011, was recently named a starter for the 48th annual All-Star game on July 28 at Fenway Park in Boston. Ramsey will protect the outfield, representing Yarmouth-Dennis. The Houston native is batting .317 in 35 games with seven doubles, a triple and 15 RBI.
Ramsey is one of two C-USA players to advance to the All-Star game. He will share the outfield with Drew Martinez of Memphis as members of the Eastern Division.
The game is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. central and live stats are available by going to www.capecodbaseball.org. CBS College Sports will also air the game live to a national audience with Eric Frede calling the play-by-play and Lou Merloni serving as the analyst.
Michael Goodnight, a teammate of Ramsey's on the Y-D Red Sox, was recently honored for his performance on the mound, being named the Coca-Cola Pitcher of the Week. During his second year in the league, Goodnight guided Y-D to a 2-0 win over Cotuit, striking out nine batters in 8.2 innings. He is 3-1 on the summer with a 2.10 ERA.
The Y-D Red Sox lead the Eastern Division with a 22-13 record.
Following the All-Star game, the regular season will continue through Aug. 4 before the playoffs begin Aug. 6-14.
