HOUSTON - University of Houston baseball head baseball coach Todd Whitting announced Thursday the signing of shortstop Chase Jensen to a National Letter of Intent.
Jensen becomes the first student-athlete to sign a NLI under Whitting, who was named the Cougars' head coach on July 2. He comes to Houston after spending one season at Weatherford College following his graduation from Martin High School in Arlington, Texas.
"Chase fills an immediate need in our program," Whitting said. "I feel that with adding him to what is already a great team we are one step closer to being a contender for an NCAA berth."
"Chase comes to UH from Weatherford College, which I feel does as good a job as any junior college in the nation of preparing its athletes to compete not only on the field but in the classroom at the Division I level."
The sophomore was a member of the 2010 Weatherford College squad that finished 39-20, tying the school record for wins in a single season. They also advanced to the program's third postseason appearance. Jensen earned honors as a Second Team All-Conference selection and was a member of the Dean's List.
As a senior at Martin High School, Jensen was a First Team All-District selection at shortstop and was an Honorable Mention honoree as a junior. He was coached by Curt Culbertson.
Jensen is the son of Lesley and Pete Jensen.
