HOUSTON - Just over a week after the 2010 Major League Baseball draft, Blake Kelso became a professional baseball player by signing with the Washington Nationals after being drafted in the 10th round.
Kelso is one of 22 prospects that have signed contracts with the Nationals. The Plugerville, Texas, native also became one of three Cougar baseball players to be selected in the first ten rounds of the draft in the last two seasons.
"I felt like this was a big opportunity for me to play at the next level," Kelso said. " College baseball is fun but I couldn't pass this up."
Kelso, a staple in the Cougar infield at shortstop, started 181 consecutive games during his three-year career at Houston, finishing with a .319 batting average, 41 doubles, 11 triples and eight home runs. He leaves Houston as UH's record holder in assists with 588.
With his professional career already underway, Kelso is currently playing with the Vermont Lake Monsters of the New York-Penn League.
In addition, 2010 senior Chris Wallace signed a contract with the Houston Astros. He is playing with the Greenville Astros of the Rookie Appalachian League.
