Baseball Drops Series Finale At Southern Miss, 8-5

Hattiesburg, Miss. - Despite a three-run home run by Joel Ansley in the fifth inning, the University of Houston baseball team could not overcome a five-run deficit against Southern Miss, falling in the series finale, 8-5, Sunday afternoon at Pete Taylor Park.
Ansley cut through the Golden Eagles', 6-1, lead in the fifth with his third home run of the season. The long ball plated Chris Wallace, who led off the inning with a triple and Ryan Still, who earned walk.
Blake Kelso followed that up with a solo shot to right center in the seventh inning, to pull within three, 8-5, after the Golden Eagles scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Ansley finished the game going 2-for-5 with a run scored and three RBIs. Kelso added three hits and an RBI.
Houston falls to 16-22 on the season and 4-8 in Conference USA action.
Southern Miss started things off, putting two runs on the board in their first at bat. Taylor Walker singled to left field and scored on B.A. Vollmuth's triple to centerfield. Vollmuth would then score on Adam Doleac's ground out to second base for the 2-0 lead.
Wallace gave Houston its first run of the contest in the third inning. After reaching base on a leadoff walk, Wallace scored on Caleb Ramsey's single to right field. The Golden Eagles, however, responded in the bottom of the inning, loading the bases with one out before going on to post one run during the at bat to extend their lead, 3-1.
Southern Miss added to its total, scoring three runs in the fourth inning. Travis Graves hit a two-run home run over left center and Kameron Brunty hit a solo shot to right field.
UP NEXT
Houston will play two mid-week games next week. The Cougars will play their fifth-straight game on the road when they travel to Sam Houston State April 27. UH will then return to Cougar Field for a rematch with Lamar on April 28 before continuing Conference USA action at UAB April 30-May 2.
