Baseball Shuts Out Missouri, 3-0, At Houston College Classic

HOUSTON - The University of Houston baseball team shutout Missouri, 3-0, Friday afternoon to win its first game at the Houston College Classic at Minute Maid Park.
With the win, Houston improves to 3-5 on the year and 1-0 at the College Classic this season. Friday's victory also marks the first shutout win of the season for the Cougars and their first since at 7-0 win over Marshall on April 24, 2009.
UH scored runs in each of its first two at bats for the early lead. In the first inning, with one out, Joel Ansley tripled to center field and scored on the next at bat, a sacrifice fly to center from Matt Creel. Matt Murphy scored Houston's second run, scoring on a Blake Kelso double after reaching base on a single through the right side.
Houston was able to score a third run in eighth inning to extend their lead to 3-0. With one out, Caleb Ramsey tripled to deep center and scored on M.P. Cokinos' RBI single to center field.
On the mound, Houston got five solid innings out of Chase Dempsay. The Baytown, Texas, native gave up just four hits and struck out two batters. William Kankel pitched 2.2 innings of relief, giving up three hits with two strikeouts. Creel earned his first career save, going the final 1.1 innings with one hit and two strikeouts.
Houston will continue play at the Houston College Classic on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. against Texas. They will close out tournament play on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. against Texas Tech. Prior to the start of Sunday's game, UH quarterback Case Keenum will throw out the honorary first pitch.
