HOUSTON - Junior Joel Ansley scored on two errors by the Santa Clara's defense to give the University of Houston baseball team a 3-2 win over the Broncos on Saturday night at Cougar Field.
With one out in the ninth, Ansley reached base on a single over the pitcher's head. With Blake Kelso at the plate, Ansley attempted to steal second and an errant pass by the Broncos catcher, that was bobbled in centerfield, sent the junior transfer racing for home to give Houston their second consecutive win.
With the win, Houston improves to 2-3 on the season and will go for the series sweep on Sunday at 1 p.m. After surrendering a run to the Broncos to open the game, Houston scored runs in each of its first two at bats to take a 2-1 lead.
Ansley led off the first inning with a double to right center and would go on the score on an RBI single off Matt Creel to knot the score, 1-1. The Cougars tacked on another run in the second off an Ansley sacrifice fly to centerfield that scored Austin Gracey, who reached on a single.
Ansley finished the night going 3-for-4 at the plate with two hits and an RBI to pace all Cougars.
Matt Creel earned the win on the mound for UH.
UH now stands at 2-0 all-time against Santa Clara.
