HOUSTON - The University of Houston baseball team dropped its Opening Day contest, 6-0, to Texas State on Friday night at Cougar Field.
With the loss, Houston falls to 0-1 for the second consecutive season.
Sophomore Michael Goodnight turned in 4.2 innings on the mound allowing just one hit before loading the bases on a single, hit batter and walk. Senior William Kankel came into the game to walk his only two batters before sophomore Codey Morehouse entered the game to try and close out the inning. His lone batter in the fifth flied out to centerfield and the Cougars closed out the inning trailing, 0-2.
The Bobcats added to their run total in the sixth inning, scoring two additional runs off a home run over the left field fence by Kyle Livingstone. A fifth run by Texas State was added in the seventh inning. The Bobcats extended their lead to 6-0 when they scored a final run in the ninth inning and held the Cougars in their final at bat to complete the shutout.
Prior to Friday night, Houston had not been shutout since a 8-0 loss to San Diego State on March 28, 2008.
Four Cougars, Matt Creel, M.P. Cokinos, Austin Gracey and Ryan Still each made their first career start on Friday night. Gracey led all batters going 2-for-4 at the plate.
UP NEXT
Houston continues the series against Texas State at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday with the finale starting at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
