HOUSTON - The University of Houston will honor members of the 2000 Cougar baseball team Saturday evening during the Homecoming football game against Tulsa.
"It is our pleasure to honor the great accomplishments of the 2000 team," head baseball coach Todd Whitting said. "This record setting ball club is one of the greatest teams in the history of Houston athletics, and it is very exciting to have them all come home this weekend. The precedent for excellence that this team established both on and off the field is one that still serves as the foundation for future teams at Houston."
In honor of the team's 10th anniversary, members of the squad will be recognized during the second quarter of the football game. The team set a program record with 48 wins, which is still tied for a single-season record.
The team finished the season ranked No. 11 in the final polls and 11 players were selected in the Major League Baseball draft. They took home their second-straight Conference USA regular season title and the program's second C-USA tournament title.
The Cougars played host to the 2000 NCAA Houston Regional, where they knocked off cross-town rival Rice to advance to the program's first NCAA Super Regional appearance. UH played San Jose State in the Super Regional at Cougar Field.
At the conclusion of the season, eight Cougars earned All-Conference honors and Kyle Crowell was named the C-USA Pitcher of the Year. It was his second Pitcher of the Year award and he remains the only player in league history to win the award twice.
Whitting will be on the field to congratulate the team. He, along with assistant coach Trip Couch, were members of the coaching staff in 2000.
