HOUSTON - The University of Houston baseball team won its fourth-straight game Friday night, defeating UT Pan Am, 15-2, in the opening game of a three-game series at Cougar Field.
Houston got another solid night out of junior Chris Wallace, who went 3-for-4 with a home run, double and three RBIs. Ty Stuckey added to the success at the plate going 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs.
William Kankel capped the night for the Cougars with a triple that scored two runs.
Cougar pitcher Frank Corolla won the first game of his career, pitching 6.0 innings, allowing two runs, no walks and three strikeouts. Donnie Joseph and Chris Wright came in relief to pitch the last three innings. The two combined to hold the Broncs to no hits, one walk and four strikeouts.
Blake Kelso led off with a single through the right side. He advanced to second on an error by the Broncs' catcher and scored on a sacrifice fly to left field by Chase Dempsay.
In the second inning, Wallace continued his hot hitting with a solo home run over left center. It was his third home run in six at bats. He followed that up with scoring Caleb Ramsey on a double down the left field line in the fourth but Wallace was thrown out at third for the first out of the inning and the next two batters grounded out to second base to close out the inning.
UTPA posted a single run in the fifth inning on three hits and followed that up with a lead-off home run in the sixth to pull within one, 3-2. But it was all Houston after that. They went on to score 12 more runs to take the commanding 15-2 win to start the series 1-0.
Houston's four runs in the sixth started with a Zak Presley single up the middle. With one out, Ramsey singled to right field advancing Presley to third and Wallace singled through the right side to score Presley. Kankel hit the Cougars' third consecutive single and fourth of the inning, plating Ramsey. Stuckey capped the inning with a double to left field, scoring Wallace and Taylor White, who reached on a fielder's choice.
Kelso hit his seventh double of the season to lead off in the seventh inning, scoring in the next at bat off a Presley double. Presley would advance to third on a bunt by Caleb Ramsey and score on a wild pitch.
Houston's final run total would come in the eighth inning. A six run spot, led off by a single from White and two straight walks for Stuckey and Jake Runte. Presley doubled to left field, plating Stuckey and White and Runte scored on a Ramsey single. Kankel's triple would close out scoring for UH, plating Ramsey and Wallace, who reached on a walk.
