NATCHITOCHES, La. - The University of Houston women's tennis team ran its spring record to 9-1 Saturday as it defeated Northwestern State 6-1 at the Jack Fisher Tennis Complex in Natchitoches, La.
"Coming into today we knew we had a tough team to play against and I'm really proud of how our girls battled," said UH head coach John Severance. "Our top three singles really came up big for us by winning in straight sets. Our No. 4-6 singles where our depth had been the strength all season long struggled a bit today but were still able to come out with two wins. This was just another complete team victory and we are excited to get off to a 9-1 start but we are also ready to face our first Conference USA opponent tomorrow in Southern Miss and know that will be a tough test."
Houston took two of three matches in the double portion of the contest with the pairs of Joanna Kacprzyk & Lynley Wasson and Lucy Forward & Vicky Simpson earning wins to give UH the doubles point.
In the singles matches, Houston did not drop a set in the No.1-3 singles matches with Kacprzyk, Forward and Wasson all delivering straight sets wins.
Freshman Alix Young dropped her first match of the season in the No. 4 single slot, falling 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 to NWLA's Bianca Schulz. Young's remains an impressive 8-1 on the spring.
Junior Neila Starratt and senior Vicky Simpson won three-set matches at the No. 5 and 6 singles positions, respectively, to round out the scoring.
The Cougars are back in action tomorrow in Natchitoches, La., as they face their first C-USA foe of the season in Southern Miss.
