HOUSTON - UTSA outfielder Tyler Carpenter's two-run double in the top of the 12th inning broke a tie and helped lift UTSA to an 11-9 win Wednesday over the University of Houston baseball team in a non-conference game at Cougar Field.
Trent Lockwood started the UTSA rally with a one-out walk and was followed by another walk to Phillip Allen. Facing a 1-2 count, Carpenter laced the ball to the wall in left center to score both runners and help lead the Roadrunners to the win.
The Cougars jumped out to a 7-3 lead after three innings, but the Roadrunners chipped away with two runs in the fourth and two more runs in the seventh inning to tie the game. UTSA appeared to grab the momentum in the eighth inning with two runs, but the Cougars answered in the bottom of the frame with two runs of their own. The score remained that way until the 12th inning.
UTSA reliever Zach Calhoon collected the win and improved to 3-1 after limiting the Cougars to one unearned run off a hit and two walks with four strikeouts in five innings.
UH reliever Taylor Hammack picked up the loss and fell to 0-1 after giving up two runs off a hit and two walks with three strikeouts in one inning.
Senior outfielder Jake Stewart went 2-for-5 with two runs, three RBIs and his team-leading 12th home run of the season, while sophomore centerfielder Zak Presley batted 3-for-6 with two runs and two doubles to extend his career-high hitting streak to 18 games, the second-longest by any Cougar slugger in 2008 and the seventh-longest in school history.
Freshman shortstop Blake Kelso went 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI in the losing effort.
Ryan Hutson went 2-for-5 with a home run and a game-high four RBIs, while Aaron Powell batted 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI to lead the UTSA offense, which outhit the Cougars 15-10. Trent Lockwood batted 2-for-4 with a double and a pair of runs, while Tim Palincsar went 2-for-6 with two RBIs. Ryan Rummel batted 2-for-5 with two runs and an RBI, and Michael Rockett batted 2-for-7 with a home run, double and RBI.
With the loss, the Cougars fell to 27-18, while UTSA improved to 33-12.

The Roadrunners struck for the game's first runs with a controversial three-run home run in the second inning. With runners on first and second, Ryan Hutson lined a fly ball down the left-field line that was originally called foul by home plate umpire Bob Charmo. However, after the umpires huddled together and discussed it, the call was changed to a home run.
In the bottom of the frame, the Cougars chipped away with a single run. After a walk to Matt Murphy and single by Felix Fanaselle, Presley reached on a fielder's choice that allowed Murphy to reach third base. Chris Wallace then lifted a sacrifice fly into right center. Two batters later, Stewart lined a RBI-single into right field and Presley just slid under the tag of catcher Zach Etheredge to trim the UTSA lead to 3-2.
The Cougars erupted for five runs off three hits, two walks and a hit batter in the third inning. Ryan Lormand led off with a walk and moved to second when Fanaselle was hit by a pitch. After teaming together for a double steal and a pitching change, Presley lined a two-run double down the left-field line to hand the Cougars their first lead.
Kelso lined an RBI-single into center field to plate Presley, and Stewart launched a towering, two-run homer over the wall in left field for a 7-3 Cougar lead.
UTSA cut the lead back to two runs in the fourth inning on Palincsar's two-out, two-run single through the left side.
The Roadrunners tied the game in the seventh inning after a Cougar infield error and Hutson's RBI-single to left field.
In the eighth inning, UTSA regained the lead when Rockett led off with a home run to left field and pushed its advantage to 9-7 on Powell's RBI-single to center field.
But the Cougars rallied with two runs of their own in the bottom of the frame. Kelso led off with a walk and moved into scoring position after Stewart was hit by a pitch. After Bryan Pounds' sacrifice bunt moved runners up a base, both Kelso and Stewart scored on an infield miscue by UTSA to knot the game at 9-9.
