BEAUMONT, Texas - Senior outfielder Bryan Tully's single through the left side and a momentary bobble in the outfield allowed Ryan Lormand to score from second base during the eighth inning as the University of Houston baseball team enjoyed a 3-2 win over Lamar on Tuesday at Vincent-Beck Stadium.
Lormand lined a sharp single up the middle to lead off and stole second base to move into scoring position. Tully then lined a single through the left field, and Lamar outfielder Tyler Link bobbled the ball for just a moment, allowing Lormand to break the tie for good.
Junior southpaw Jimmy Raviele collected the win in relief and improved to 2-1 after holding the Cardinals scoreless with only two hits and a pair of strikeouts in three innings. The Richmond native retired eight of the last nine batters the he faced to earn his second straight win.
Freshman closer Chase Dempsay earned his team-leading seventh save after tossing a perfect ninth inning. With that, the Baytown, native set a UH freshman recording, topping the previous best of six saves by Robert Dieudonne in 1997.
Sophomore centerfielder Zak Presley went 1-for-1 with three walks to extend his career-high hitting streak to 17 consecutive games. It ties as the ninth longest in school history and is the second longest streak by any Cougar slugger in 2008, trailing only teammate Bryan Pounds' 19-game streak.
Lormand went 2-for-4 with a stolen base, while Tully batted 2-for-3 with a double to lead the Cougar offense, which outhit the Cardinals 8-7.
Lamar reliever Matt Gore picked up the loss and fell to 0-1 after allowing an unearned run off two hits and a walk with four strikeouts in three innings.
Link went 3-for-5 to lead Lamar offensively.
With the win, the Cougars improved to 27-17, while Lamar fell to 26-18.
The Cougars return to action at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday when they play host to UTSA at Cougar Field. Freshman righthander Jared Ray is scheduled to start on the mound for the Cougars with sophomore righthander Ryan Proudfoot toeing the rubber for the Roadrunners.

The Cougars struck for the game `s first run in the third inning. Blake Kelso drew his second straight walk and moved all the way to third base on a hit-and-run by Pounds. Jimmy Cesario then lined a one-out single through the right side for a 1-0 Cougar lead.
The Cardinals tied the game in the bottom of the frame, following Logan Pace's double to right center and a Cougar fielding miscue in the outfield.
UH regained the lead in the fourth inning with another single run. After Presley's single and Chris Wallace reached on a fielder's choice, Kelso slapped an RBI-single into left field to plate Presley for a 2-1 Cougar lead.
Lamar again answered in the bottom of the frame and knotted the game at 2-2 on Nik Gumeson's groundout, which allowed Travis Dunson to score from third base.
