HOUSTON - After managing only one hit through the first four innings, the University of Houston baseball team erupted for 14 runs off 12 hits during its final four innings to turn a six-run deficit into a 14-8 win over Louisiana on Tuesday at Cougar Field.
After the Cajuns jumped out to a 6-0 lead through the first four-and-a-half innings, the Cougars cut the deficit in half with three runs in the bottom of the fifth before grabbing the lead for good with seven runs in the sixth.
Ryan Lormand led off with a single and moved to second when Jimmy Cesario was hit by a pitch. Following a UL pitching change, both runners took off on a successive double steal, and Lormand scored easily on a Cajun infield miscue. Bryan Tully drew a walk and junior DH Felix Fanaselle - making his first start of the season - slapped an RBI-single to right field to scored Cesario and pull the Cougars to within a run.
Sophomore centerfielder Zak Presley then handed the Cougars the lead for good with a two-run single into center field to score Austin Goolsby and Tully. Blake Kelso lined a single to center field and teamed with Presley on the Cougars' second double-steal of the inning. Jake Stewart lifted a sacrifice fly into right field to plate Presley, and Lormand drilled an RBI-single into left field - his second hit of the inning - to score Kelso and cap the scoring.
The Cougars went on to add two more runs in the seventh inning before Louisiana added two runs of its own on Nolan Gisclair's two-out, two run-single. But UH got those runs back in the next half inning on an RBI-double from Lormand and Tully's RBI-single for the final margin of victory.
All but one Cougar starter rapped out at least one hit in the game as UH reached double-digit hits for the fourth time in nine games. Lormand went 3-for-5 with a double, two runs and two RBIs and became the first player since Presley in the 10th inning at Lamar on March 27, 2007, to record two hits in one inning.
Kelso batted 2-for-4 with a run, triple and two RBIs, while Tully finished the night 2-for-3 with a double, two runs and two RBIs. Fanaselle went 2-for-3 with a run and three RBIs, while senior outfielder Jake Stewart went 1-for-3 with a run, double and RBI to extend his hitting streak to nine games.
Senior first baseman Bryan Pounds also went 1-for-4 with a double and two runs to extend his hitting streak to a career-best nine games dating back to last season.
Junior southpaw reliever Jimmy Raviele earned the win and evened his season record at 1-1 after allowing a run off two hits with a strikeout in 1.1 innings. UL reliever Luke Wagley collected the loss and fell to 0-2 after allowing two runs (one earned) off a hit and a walk with a strikeout in 0.1 innings.
Scott Hawkins went 3-for-5 with a run, double and four RBIs to lead the UL offense, which posted 11 hits in the game. Matt Goulas went 2-for-5 with a run, while Matt Hicks finished the night 2-for-5 with a double, two runs and an RBI. Gisclair went 2-for-4 with a run and two RBIs in the losing effort.

The Cajuns struck for the game's first runs, plating two runs on a Hawkins one-out double to left center field in the top of the fourth inning.
One inning later, the Cajuns scored four runs on four hits to take a 6-0 lead. Josh Logan started the scoring on a squeeze bunt that plated Gisclair, who led off with a single to left field. Hicks soon followed with an RBI-single and Hawkins added a two-run single to left center.
In the bottom of the inning, Pounds, Austin Goolsby and Tully led off with three straight walks before Fanaselle slapped a two-run single into right field. After a sacrifice bunt by Presley, Kelso grounded out to shortstop, scoring Tully from third.
