Women's Basketball Falls 85-74 To SMU

DALLAS - The University of Houston women's basketball team was undone by a slow start to the second half and dropped its fifth-straight game, 74-85, to SMU Saturday in Conference USA action in Moody Coliseum.
Houston (14-14, 8-6 C-USA) was outscored 21-9 in the first nine minutes of the half and a 40-36 halftime lead was turned into a 57-49 SMU advantage with 11:06 left.
The Cougars, who led by seven with 16:02 left in the game, went nearly seven minutes without making a field goal as SMU (21-6, 11-3 C-USA) won its seventh-straight game. UH has not won a game in Moody since Jan. 25, 1995
After firing at a 44.4 percent clip in the first half (16-for-36), the Cougars were 4-for-15 (.267) over the first 12:30 of the second half.
Houston won the battle of the boards 40-37 and also outscored the Mustangs in the paint 38-34. UH turned it over 18 times and SMU converted those giveaways into 25 points. SMU also got to the free-throw line 34 times compared to just 20 for Houston.
Twiggy McIntyre (Sapulpa, Okla./Sapulpa HS/Kansas State) led all players with 25 points. She was 7-for-11 from the field and 4-for-5 from behind the three-point line.
Cobilyn Hill (Houston, Texas/Eisenhower HS) and Courtney Taylor (Crockett, Texas/Crockett HS) both tallied double-doubles. Taylor had 13 points and 11 boards off the bench and Hill scored 14 along with 10 rebounds.
Tye Jackson (Houston, Texas/Westfield HS/Purdue) scored 10 points along with eight assists.
The Cougars led 40-36 at the half, the team's highest offensive output in a first half since scoring 51 on McNeese State on Nov. 25. UH shot 44.4 percent (16-for-36) from the field and went 5-for-5 from the charity stripe. Houston also held SMU without a field goal for the final 1:40 of the half.
McIntyre had 15 in the half, leading all players, after draining four triples in the half. She also hit a driving floater as time expired in the half. UH held a 21-19 edge on the boards and converted eight offensive rebounds into 11 second-chance points.
Janielle Dodds led the Mustangs with 21 points and nine rebounds. Delisha Wills added 18 along with nine boards, Jillian Samuels knocked down three triples and finished with 17 and Sharee Shepherd scored 14.
Houston finishes out the regular season next weekend, returning to Guy V. Lewis Court at Hofheinz Pavilion for the first time in over two weeks. The Cougars will face East Carolina Thursday at 7 p.m. CST before taking on Marshall at 1 p.m. Saturday.
The Marshall game will serve as senior day as Houston will recognize the contributions of its five-member senior class. Tye Jackson, Whitney James, Twiggy McIntyre, Ryan Meyers and Alona Obaze will be honored on a pregame ceremony.
