HOUSTON - The University of Houston soccer team lost its first home match of the season Friday, dropping a 3-1 decision to UTSA on John O'Quinn Field at Robertson Stadium.
The Cougars (4-3-1), who were 3-0-1 on the home turf entering the game, lost to the Roadrunners (2-6-1) for the first time ever. UTSA snapped a four-match losing streak.
Ezinne Opko knocked a chip shot from 20 yards out over the head of a charging Shelby Scott (Mesquite, Texas/North Mesquite HS) and into the back of the net, tallying the game winner for the Roadrunners seconds before the halftime whistle.
Houston had fought back from an early 1-0 deficit after Lauri Byrne (Southlake, Texas/Southlake Carroll HS) played a give-and-go with Islara Rodriguez (Houston, Texas/Awty International School) in the 42nd minute. Byrne passed a ball from the top of the box that Rodriguez fired to the right of UTSA goalkeeper Rachel Francis and into the goal. It was Rodriguez's third goal of the year and the second in two games.
Jenny Munoz got the scoring started off a corner kick in the 37th minute. Halee Hamm served the ball into the box and it rattled around and found its way to the feet of Munoz who turned and sent it in the goal.
The Cougars had several chances in the opening minutes of the second half to knot it up at two as Rodriguez and Byrne both had shots on the net that were scooped up by Kasi Herbert, who entered the game at halftime.
Veronica Najera struck the final blow in the 83rd minute when she brought the ball up the right side, dribbled through a pair of defenders and send a shot into the lower left corner of the net past a diving Scott.
Houston closes out a season-long, three-match homestand at 1 p.m. CDT Sunday against TCU. The match will be aired nationally by CSTV on a tape-delayed basis. Ann Schatz (play-by-play) and Tammy Blackburn (analyst) will call the action. CSTV plans to air the match on Oct. 2.
