HOUSTON - TCU's Jackie Torda knocked in a goal off a free kick in the 93rd minute, handing the University of Houston soccer team a 1-0 overtime defeat, Sunday on John O'Quinn Field at Robertson Stadium.
Torda, wide open in space on the left side of the box, found the ball at her feet after it rattled through the penalty area off a free kick from Michelle Nguyen. Torda sent it past a diving Shelby Scott (Mesquite, Texas/North Mesquite HS) to seal the sudden-death win and snapping the Frogs' (4-6) four-game losing streak.
The goal spoiled a strong defensive effort by the Cougars (4-4-1) who gave up 26 shots, but only a handful of solid chances. Scott made nine saves as UH dropped its second-straight match and fourth in the last five.
The start of the match was delayed over two hours because of lightening in the area.
CSTV was on hand for the first nationally televised game in program history. The game will be shown on Oct. 2 at 9 p.m. CDT with Ann Schatz (play-by-play) and Tammy Blackburn (analyst) calling the action.
UH found its best chance to score in the 84th minute. Lauri Byrne (Southlake, Texas/Southlake Carroll HS) headed the ball and it was deflected by TCU `keeper Kelsey Vross and out of bounds. On the ensuing corner kick, Stephanie Booker (Round Rock, Texas/Stony Point HS) had a shot blocked and then had her rebound knocked out of bounds by a diving Vross.
A minute later, TCU's Cheryl Martin earned her second yellow card of the day, leading to a red-card ejection. UH played with a man advantage for the final seven minutes of the game, but could not convert their chances.
Islara Rodriguez (Houston, Texas/Awty International School) tallied a team-high three shots.
TCU had a potential goal knocked out of bounds by Booker in the 16th minute. After a shot from TCU's Lizzy Karoly, Scott came off her line to play the ball, which bounced passed her and back to Karoly.
Karoly turned and shot it at the goal and Booker came flying in from the other side at the goal line to knock it out of play.
Conference USA play is on the horizon for the Cougars, starting off with crosstown rival Rice next Friday. The two rivals, whose six previous matchups have all been decided by a goal or less, will face off at 7 p.m. CDT at the Rice Soccer Stadium.
