HOUSTON - Head coach Kyla Holas announced the University of Houston softball schedule for the upcoming 2008 season Wednesday afternoon.
"I think that this year's schedule is a lot tougher than last year's," Holas said. "We had a really big focus on our RPI and our scheduling, which helped when it came to post-season time and we've continued that." Houston opens the season with trio of tournaments held at the Cougar Softball Stadium. They will compete against Nicholls State and McNeese State in the second weekend in February at the Houston Invitational. The Cougars will play host to four teams, including 2007 College World Series competitor DePaul, during the Crowne Plaza Classic. Army, Texas A&M Corpus Christi and Libscomb will join them in Houston on Feb. 15-17. The following weekend, Feb. 22-24, Houston will head straight into their third tournament where Boston University, Cal State Northridge, Texas State, Kansas and Centenary will enter the Cougar Softball Stadium for the Marriott Houston Classic.
A big highlight during the season will be the Second Annual Breast Cancer Awareness game on March 5 when the team will be swapping out their home jerseys for pink ones to honor the breast cancer awareness survivors. All proceeds from the silent auction being held will be donated to the cause. The Cougars conclude the spring tournament schedule with a trip to the Bulldog Classic (Mar. 7-9) hosted by Fresno State. Houston will get a crack at DePaul for the second time as well as last season NCAA Regional opponents Fresno State and Cal Poly in addition to Rhode Island, Sacramento State and Santa Clara.
The Cougars take on Fresno State immediately following the Bulldog Classic in a double header on March 11 before heading back to Houston for the home opener and three-game series against conference opponent Marshall (March 15-16)
"I think this year is a much tougher schedule," Holas said, "because we have a lot more Big 12 opponents and we've added a Big 10 opponent in Ohio State. We actually have three teams who were in the College World Series last year on our schedule. We have ULL coming to Houston and we go to Fresno for the first time, so we have some really big events."
The team will travel to Virginia Tech and Ohio State for two midweek match-ups March 18 and 19. From there they'll have a short time to prepare for the three-game series against SMU at home March 21-22. Houston will finish out the month of March by taking on Sam Houston State (March 26) and Memphis (March 29-30) at the Cougar Softball Stadium.
April opens up with a conference match against Central Florida in Orlando. The second week in April, the Cougars will play host to Texas-San Antonio (April 9) and East Carolina, April 12-13.
The second half of the month the Cougars take on two NCAA Regional participants Baylor, April 16, and ULL, April 30 and finish up the conference road schedule Tulsa, April 19-20 and UAB, April 26-27. "I think we're really broadening our base and getting out there," Holas said. "We're doing some things that are going to keep us in the position that we want to be in."
The 2008 regular season is concluded with a home game against UTEP May 3-4 before the Cougars host the C-USA Tournament at the Cougar Softball Stadium.
