HOUSTON - Southern Miss scored three runs in the first inning and never looked back in taking a 7-2 win over the University of Houston baseball team Saturday during the finale of a Conference USA series at Cougar Field.
After the first two batters of the game reached on a hit and walk, Jody Blount gave the Golden Eagles the lead for good with a home run to left field. The Cougars pulled to within a run in the second inning, but USM answered in the next half inning with a run of its and iced the game with single runs in each of the middle innings.
UH starter Bryan Tully collected the loss and dropped to 2-2 after giving up three runs off four hits and a walk without retiring a batter.
USM starter David Clark picked up the win and improved to 8-4 after allowing only two runs off eight hits and a walk with four strikeouts in the complete-game victory.
Blount went 3-for-5 with a homer, two runs, and three RBIs, while Trey Sutton finished the day 2-for-5 with a home run and two runs scored. Luke Adkins batted 2-for-5 with a double and RBI, and Michael Ewing went 2-for-3 to lead the Golden Eagles offense.
With the loss, the Cougars fell to 28-26 overall, 12-12 in C-USA games, while Southern Miss improved to 37-19 overall and 14-10 in league contests
The Cougars look to get back on the winning track when they meet No. 5 seed Memphis at 8 a.m. (CDT), Wednesday during the first round of the 2007 C-USA Tournament at Clark-LeClair Stadium. That game will be the first time since 1998 that the two teams will meet during the league's annual postseason event.

Southern Miss jumped out quickly in the first inning with a 3-0 lead on Blount's home run to left field.
One inning later, the Cougars plated their first run of the series when Josh Stirneman led off the second with a home run over the right-field wall. The Cougar rally continued with three straight singles from Felix Fanaselle, Luis Flores and Bryan Tully, and Fanaselle pulled the Cougars to within 3-2 on a wild pitch.
The Golden Eagles pushed their lead back to two runs in the next half inning when James Ewing's groundout scored Blount from third base.
In the fourth inning, Brian Dozier lined an RBI-single through the left side to plate Chris Matesich for a 5-2 lead.
One inning later, Adkins smashed a one-out double to right center, moved to third after a groundout and scored on a wild pitch to hand the Golden Eagles 6-2 lead.
In the sixth inning, Sutton launched a 1-1 offering over the right-field fence for the final margin of victory.
