SAN DIEGO, Calif. - No. 22 San Diego scored five runs in the second inning and never looked back in taking an 8-1 win over the University of Houston baseball team Friday during the opener of a non-conference series at Cunningham Stadium.
The Toreros took advantage of three hits and three walks to take control of the game. That would be more than enough run support for USD starter Brian Matusz, who picked up the win and improved to 4-1 after holding the Cougars to one run off five hits with 11 strikeouts in eight innings.
UH starter Aaron Brown collected the loss and fell to 2-1 after giving up seven runs (six earned) off six hits with a pair of strikeouts in 6.2 innings.
Justin Snyder went 3-for-5 with two runs, a double and RBI, while Josh Romanski finished the day 3-for-5 to lead the Toreros, who outhit the Cougars 8-5.
With the loss, the Cougars saw their season-best, four-game winning streak come to an end and fell to 11-10 overall. San Diego improved to 17-9 overall.
The series continues at 3 p.m. (CDT) Saturday before wrapping up at 3 p.m. (CDT) Sunday. Redshirt freshman southpaw Wes Musick will make his team-leading seventh start when he takes the hill against San Diego in the series opener.
This season, the Lufkin native has compiled a 3-3 record with 26 strikeouts and a 4.15 ERA in 30.1 innings of work. He leads all Cougar hurlers in wins, strikeouts, innings pitched and ERA and ranks among the Top Five individual leaders in C-USA in the first three categories.
In his last start, Musick was impressive during the series opener against Princeton on March 9, holding the Tigers to only one hit with 10 strikeouts in seven innings of work to help lead the Cougars to a 5-0 win. His strikeout and innings pitched totals were the best by any Cougar pitcher in 2007.
Saturday's game will be Musick's first career appearance against San Diego.
San Diego scored the game's first runs in the second inning when James Meador bounced a single up the middle with the bases loaded, scoring two runs and putting runners on the corner. Kevin Hansen then reached on a fielder's choice that allowed Logan Gelbrich. After Snyder's single and a wild pitch put runners on second and third, Romanski lined a two-run single up the middle for a 5-0 USD lead.
The Cougars put their first mark on the scoreboard in the fourth inning when Dustin Kingsbury launched a 1-2 offering over the left-field wall.
The Toreros pushed their lead back to five runs in the next half inning when Romanski's RBI-single into center field scored Snyder from second base
In the seventh inning, Shane Buschini took advantage of the Cougars' lone error to score an unearned run from third base for a 7-1 USD lead.
One inning later, the Toreros capped their scoring for the day when Snyder's double to right field plated Mike Metzger.
