Baseball Falls to Host Dallas Baptist at Southwest Diamond Classic

FRISCO, Texas - Dallas Baptist took advantage of two walks and two key infield errors in the eighth inning to score two runs and break a tie on the way to a 7-5 win over the University of Houston baseball team Friday during the second day of the Southwest Diamond Classic at Dr. Pepper Ballpark.
The loss spoiled a valiant comeback by the Cougars, who trailed 3-0 after the first inning and 5-1 after four innings, but tied the game at 5-5 in the top of the eighth on Jimmy Cesario's opposite-field, three-run homer.
In the bottom of the eighth, J.T. Bloodworth reached on the first infield error with one out and moved up a base following Austin Krum's walk. After both runners moved up on a wild pitch, Austin Knight drew a walk to load the bases. Garrett Baker then reached following the second miscue that allowed two runs to score.
UH reliever Dereck Cloeren collected the loss and fell to 0-2 after giving up two unearned runs off two walks in one inning. DBU reliever Randall Taylor picked up the win and improved to 1-1 after holding the Cougars scoreless over the final 1.1 innings.
Cesario went 2-for-4 with two runs and three RBIs to lead the Cougars, who outhit DBU 9-8. Felix Fanaselle finished the night 2-for-4 with a pair of runs, while senior first baseman Josh Stirneman went 2-for-4 with two RBIs in the losing effort.
Krum went 3-for-3 with a triple, RBI and three runs scored, while Nick Santos batted 2-for-4 with an RBI for DBU.
The Cougars wrap up their in Frisco when they face Texas-Arlington at 11 a.m., Saturday. Dallas Baptist scored three runs in the first inning, thanks to Evan Bigley's bases-loaded groundout, a Cougar infield error and Matt Tucker's RBI-single.
The Cougars put their first mark on the scoreboard in the fourth inning. Jimmy Cesario lined a one-out base hit up the middle. Josh Stirneman followed with a sharp single into left field that was misplayed, allowing Cesario to race all the way from first base.
But in the bottom of the inning, DBU added two runs on Austin Krum's RBI-triple to center field and Austin Knight's sacrifice fly to left field for a 5-1 DBU lead.
In the sixth inning, the Cougars added another run. Felix Fanaselle led off with a double to left center and tagged up on Dustin Kingsbury's fly ball to right field. Josh Stirneman then laced a two-out RBI-single into center field to trim the DBU lead to 5-2.
The score remained that way until the eighth inning when the Cougars struck for three runs to tie the game. Ryan Lormand drew a leadoff walk and Felix Fanaselle followed with an infield single. Jimmy Cesario then launched the first pitch he saw into the left-field stands to knot the game at 5-5.
