HOUSTON - As the 2008 season draws closer, the University of Houston baseball recently made plans for the 2009 campaign with the signing of five players to National Letters of Intent during the early signing period.
Pitchers Michael Goodnight (Westside HS) and Mo Wiley (Mayde Creek), infielders Codey Morehouse (Langham Creek HS) and Taylor White (Fort Bend Baptist Academy) and catcher Nate Peterson (LSU-Eunice) are expected to compete for the Cougars during the 2009 season.
With these signings under UH assistant coach and recruiting coordinator Kirk Blount, head coach Rayner Noble said he was excited about the future of the program.
"This class is along the same lines as our freshman class this season," said Noble, who enters his 14th season at UH in 2008. "It is a very talented group, and all of them have a chance to walk straight in here and be major contributors."
All but Peterson are finishing their respective high school careers, while Peterson is expected to transfer to UH from LSU-Eunice following the 2008 season. Peterson also is the lone member of the group who does not hail from the greater Houston Area.
Goodnight is an award-winning player in both football and baseball at Westside High. As a junior, he was named to the All-District 21-5A First Team as an infielder and was named the league's football Most Valuable Player at quarterback after throwing for 2,452 yards and 22 touchdowns.
Morehouse was an All-District 17-5A Second-Team honoree as a junior in 2007 and helped lead the Lobos to a win over Kingwood High with a late RBI-triple during Game One of the regional semifinals.
