HOUSTON - With Conference USA play fast approaching on the horizon, the University of Houston soccer team takes on its final two non-league opponents of the season this weekend at Robertson Stadium.
Houston (4-4) plays McNeese State on Friday at 7 p.m. CST before facing off against Texas State, Sunday at 1 p.m. Houston is a combined 5-0 against both squads coming to town this weekend. UH and McNeese State last faced off in 1998, with UH earning the 3-1 win in Lake Charles, La. The Cougars have won four-straight against the Bobcats, dating back to 2000. The two squads last played in 2003, with UH winning a 2-1 double overtime thriller.
McNeese State enters with a 4-1 mark this season, most recently knocking off Mississippi Valley State, 2-0, on Wednesday. Kamryn Koch leads the way for the Cowgirls, with five goals on the season. Cynthia Torres, who has a pair of scores on the season, is the only other player of the squad to have netted more than one goal. Goalkeeper Aubrey Ross has seen the lion's share of action in net this season, 4-0 mark with 13 saves and two shutouts.
The Cougars return to Robertson Stadium after a season-long three-game road swing. UH was 2-1 on the trip, knocking off UTSA Sunday in overtime. Despite scoring just two goals last weekend, UH has not suffered from a lack of chances. The Cougars average nearly 20 shots per game (19.5), with three players taking more than five attempts a contest.
Sophia Mundy's (Katy, Texas/St. Pius X/Portland State) had both of Houston's goals last weekend, moving her season total to four. She leads the team with six assist and is tied for eighth nationally, averaging 0.75 assists per game.
Jordan Godbolt (Austin, Texas/Travis HS) and Courtney Gaines (Sugar Land, Texas/Clements HS) are tied for the team scoring lead with five goals apiece.
After this weekend, the Cougars open up league play at home, facing Southern Miss and UCF on Sept. 29 and Oct. 1, respectively.
