FORT WORTH, Texas - A late chance off a corner kick came up short and the University of Houston soccer team lost 2-1 to TCU Sunday at Garvey-Rosenthal Stadium.
Houston (3-3) had a corner kick in the 90th minute, taken by Sophia Mundy (Katy, Texas/St. Pius X/Portland State). With all 11 players in the box, the ball found its way to the foot of Courtney Gaines (Sugar Land, Texas/Clements HS) in the midst of a mad scramble. Gaines could not convert and the contest ended with the ball in the hands of TCU goalkeeper Katy Buchanan. TCU (3-3) has won four-straight matches over UH, dating back to 2003.
"I think we outplayed them for 70 minutes, but we did not have as much success in the first 20 minutes of the game," head coach Bill Solberg said. "We were all over them in the last two-thirds of the game and I feel we deserved to win. We didn't finish our chances, but I thought our preparation and the last 70 minutes of the game were solid."
The Cougars were in a 2-0 deficit early as the Horned Frogs' Lauren Pope scored her fourth goal of the season in the 12th minute. She was followed six minutes later by Chelsea White's first tally of the year.
Houston got one back in the 22nd minute as Jordan Godbolt (Austin, Texas/Travis HS) knocked in her fifth goal of the season, heading in a cross from Mundy.
Mundy dribbled the ball down to the end line and crossed it back into the box where a streaking Godbolt knocked it in the back of the net from eight yards out. It was Mundy's sixth assist of the season, moving her within one of tying UH's single-season record of seven, held by Kara Bullinger and Rebecca Smith. She is tied for second-play all-time on the career charts with 11 assists, sharing the spot with Ashley Fortenberry. Bullinger is the UH's career leader, with 19 assists spanning 1998-2001.
Godbolt finished the week with two goals while Mundy's tally was one goal and three assists.
The Cougars had a number of chances leading up the last-second corner kick, but had them turned away by Buchanan, who finished the day with five saves. UH's Shelby Scott (Mesquite, Texas/North Mesquite HS) made four saves and took the loss, dropping her record to 3-3.
"If we can put together a good 90 minutes as a team, we are going to be a pretty tough team when we start conference play here in a few weeks," Solberg said.
The Cougars continue a season-long three-match road swing next weekend at Stephen F. Austin and UTSA on Friday and Sunday, respectively.
