NEW ORLEANS, La. - A 19 for 64 shooting night doomed the University of Houston women's basketball team to its second-straight defeat, a 65-54 loss to Tulane in Conference USA action at Fogelman Arena Friday.
Houston's (9-13, 6-5 C-USA) 29.7 shooting tally was its second-worst of the season and wasted a solid defensive effort as Tulane (11-9, 5-6 C-USA) was held under 40 percent shooting (.396) in its own building.
Once again, UH held a dominant edge in the turnover battle. The Cougars turned 24 Tulane turnovers into 20 points while only giving the ball up 13 times. In the past six games, UH is forcing opponents into an average of 22.6 turnovers per game, but is just 2-4 during that span.
A three by Nakazi Glover (Brookshire, Texas/Bellaire HS) with 6:24 left pulled UH within three at 50-47. Following that bucket, Tulane went on a 7-0 to move the advantage to 10, 57-47, with 3:11 left. A pair of free throws by Tye Jackson (Houston, Texas/Westfield HS/Purdue) with 2:59 left pulled UH within eight and a layup by Becky Gibson (Macon, Ga./Westside HS/Coffeyville CC) after a steal by Sha'Quaylon McKinney (Dallas, Texas/Skyline HS/Trinity Valley CC) on the next possession brought UH to within six at 57-51.
After a pair of free throws by the Green Wave's Nikki Luckhurst, a layup by Jackson kept the deficit to six, 59-53, with 1:32 to go. That layup would be UH's last field goal of the evening and the Cougar's lone remaining point came off a Jackson free throw with 1:12 to go. All told, UH was 3 for 16 from the field and 3 of 6 from the charity stripe with four turnovers in the last eight minutes. Tulane made just two field goals in the last 11 minutes of the game, but the Green Wave were 17 for 20 from the free throw line during that time.
UH was also handcuffed by its lack of depth as Emily Fryters (Adelaide, Australia/Concordia College), Glover and Ryan Meyers (Arlington, Texas/Arlington HS/Grayson County CC) all fouled out in the last five minutes of the game.
Glover led UH with 18 points, 14 of which came in the second half. Jackson managed 15 points in spite of a 4 for 21 shooting night and a 2 for 10 effort from behind the arc. The junior transfer was 5 for 6 from the charity stripe. Fryters and Meyers combined for 15 of UH' 36 rebounds.
Tulane's Jennifer Sands led all players with 19 points and 15 rebounds. Twelve of her 19 points came via layups as UH continued to struggle defensively in the paint. Ashley Langford finished with 12, Luckhurst had 11 and Jami Montagnino finished with 10 points and 11 boards.
Houston closes out the weekend in El Paso, Texas where the Cougars will look for the season sweep against UTEP. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. MST in the Haskins Center.
