CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Charlotte used a 19-5 run midway through the second half to knock off the University of Houston women's basketball team, 81-58, Thursday at Halton Arena.
Trailing by 14 at the break, Houston tried to break out in the second half, but could never get the lead under 12. After a layup by Ryan Bradley (Houston, Texas/Madison HS) brought the score to 45-33 with 17:15 remaining, A tip-in by Ashley Spriggs on the next possession started the 19-5, 6:19 run that put the game away. During that span, UH hit only one field goal, with the other three points coming on free throws.
Charlotte (6-5) moved to 6-0 at home this season, while Houston (3-8) dropped to 0-6 on the road. The 49ers hit for 31-of-70 field goals and were 14-for-15 from the free throw line. Houston struggled from the floor, shooting just 35 percent (23-for-64). The Cougars three-point shooting (3-for-16) and free-throw shooting (9-for-15) were not up to par either.
The 49ers put the game away with some strong inside play, turning 20 offensive rebounds into 19 second-chance points. Charlotte won the overall battle of the boards 51-33 against a UH team that was a shadow of the squad that knocked off Miami two nights ago.
Tye Jackson (Houston, Texas/Westfield HS/Purdue) finished with a team-high 16 points while Sunshine Misa-Uli (Honolulu, Hawai'i/Farrington HS/Barton County CC) had 11 and Whitney James (Edmond, Okla./Edmond Memorial HS/N. Oklahoma College) finished with a career-best 10 points.
Over half of Charlotte's points came off the bench with Whitney Hoey knocking in a game-high 17 and Wendy Stywalt hitting for 12. Aysha Jones (15) and Traci Ray (10) also hit for double digits. Burgin was the game's leading rebounder with nine.
With Houston holding a 10-8 lead just over five minutes into the game, Charlotte took control, ending the half on a 34-18 run, leading 42-28 at the break. Charlotte's 42 points was the largest number of first-half points given up by UH this season and tied for the most given up in either half.
After playing four games in six days, Houston will take some time off for the holidays, returning to action on Dec. 30 against Colorado. The game is slotted for an 8 p.m. CST tipoff in the Coors Events and Conference Center in Boulder, Colo.
