MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The University of Houston soccer team saw its two-game winning streak snapped with a 3-0 defeat at Memphis, in Conference USA action on Sunday at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex.
The Cougars (9-9, 3-5 C-USA) were limited offensively, taking just three shots, one going on goal. Memphis (9-6-2, 5-2-1 C-USA) took 24 shots, 17 in the second half and earned only its second win over Houston in eight tries.
Houston had chances in the first half, taking four corner kicks but only converting one shot off those opportunities. Memphis was on the board in the thirteenth minute after Maiko Higashiyama found the back of the net. Memphis headed into halftime with the 1-0 advantage.
Melissa Savage knocked a rebound past UH goalkeeper Shelby Scott (Mesquite, Texas/North Mesquite HS) in the 59th minute and Shoko Mikami closed out the scoring in the 74th minute with her 12th goal of the season.
Sophia Mundy (Katy, Texas/St. Pius X/Portland State) had UH's lone shot on goal in the 67th minute off a bending corner kick that ended up in the hands of Memphis `keeper Isabel Briones. Briones made the one save, earning the win while Scott made four saves in the loss. Kristen Cooper (Katy, Texas/Langham Creek HS/San Angelo St.) and Courtney Gaines (Sugar Land, Texas/Clements HS) had UH's other shots.
The Cougars close out the regular season at home, taking on arch-rival Rice on Friday at 7 p.m. Prior to the game on John O'Quinn Field at Robertson Stadium, Houston will honor its five-member senior class. The 2006 senior class includes, Cooper, Jennifer Dry (Norman, Okla./Norman HS), Sarah Fisher (Katy, Texas/Cypress Springs HS), Mundy and Heather Williams (Valrico, Fla./Durant HS).
Houston's postseason fate has not yet been decided. The Cougars have tallied nine points in league play, tied with Tulsa, but in possession of the eighth slot by virtue of UH's double-overtime win over the Golden Hurricane last weekend. Tulsa plays twice next weekend, at Southern Miss on Friday and at UCF on Sunday. The top-eight teams in the regular season qualify for the C-USA Championship, taking place Nov. 1-5 in Dallas.
