OMAHA, Neb. - A slow start put the University of Houston women's basketball team into a hole it could not escape from, resulting in a 76-59 loss to Creighton at the Omaha Civic Auditorium Wednesday.
Sha'Ratta Hawkins (Houston, Texas/Jesse Jones HS) finished with a game-high 23 points, 19 of which came in the second 20 minutes of play. Hawkins also had a career-best six steals.
Despite converting 25 Blue Jays' turnovers into 28 points, Houston (1-3) was hampered by an 18 for 63 (.286) shooting effort, including a 4 for 16 night from behind the arc.
UH had the early 2-0 lead for exactly nine seconds before Creighton (1-2) tied it up 2-2 at the 18:40 mark. A 19-5 run for the Blue Jays over the next 6:24 put the home squad up by 14, 21-7, with 11:12 remaining in the opening stanza. The Cougars were in double figures moments later when Kadi Creel (Duncanville, Texas/Duncanville HS) drained a three to make it 21-10 with 10:51 left in the half.
A pair of free throws from Nakazi Glover (Brookshire, Texas/Bellaire HS) made the margin nine, 21-12, with 10:20 to go. That would be as close as the Cougars would be the rest of the half as a 29-11 run by the Blue Jays moved the lead to 27 at the half, 50-23.
In the second half, UH went down by as many as 33, 73-40, with 6:45 left in the game. That field goal, a jumper by Angie Janis, was the last bucket for the Blue Jays as UH held CU to just three points, all on free throws, in the final six minutes of the game. UH outscored CU 19-3 during that span as Hawkins poured in eight of her 19 second-half points. It was too little too late with the final margin being 17 at 76-59 in favor of the Blue Jays.
Creel finished the night with a season-high 12 points while Ryan Meyers (Arlington, Texas/Arlington HS/Grayson County CC) added 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds.
The Blue Jays, who entered the game shooting 32.1 percent on the season, made nearly half their shots (29 for 61/.475) and held a 10-2 advantage on fast break points. The Blue Jays were dominant inside for most of the game, finishing with a 54-32 advantage on the glass and winning the points in the paint battle 34-14.
The Cougars return to action with a pair of games this weekend in the Commerce Bank Wildcat Classic. UH faces Saint Joseph's on Friday at 3 p.m. CST in Kansas State's Bramlage Coliseum. UH will face either the host Wildcats or Texas Pan-American on Saturday.
