HOUSTON - Rommie Maxey, an assistant coach at Bellaire High School for the last three seasons, was named as a volunteer assistant coach for the University of Houston Baseball program. UH head coach Rayner Noble made the announcement on Thursday afternoon. Maxey will work closely with the Cougar outfielders and add some hitting duties in his role. "We're fortunate to have someone with his experience," Noble said. "He knows a lot about baseball in the Greater Houston area and will be a tremendous asset for our program" He joined the Cougar program while serving as the regional director for Texas Monarch Management Corporation, which provides athletic insurance for more than 800 school districts in Texas. Maxey has worked for that company since 2000. In addition to his business duties, Maxey remained active in the baseball community in the greater Houston area. At Bellaire High, he worked closely with the infielders and hitters, assisted with game preparations and served as a first base coach. During his tenure at Bellaire from 2002-04, the Cardinals posted a combined 82-18 record with two District 21-5A championships and three consecutive appearances in the Regionals. Each member of the Bellaire infield during that time would go on to play collegiate baseball with eight of those competing at NCAA Division I schools. Maxey began his coaching career at Plano High School in 1972 and served in that role until 1977. In 1975, he guided the Wildcats to the school's only appearance in the state tournament. He moved into administration in 1977, serving as athletics director for Athens ISD until 1981. He would go on to serve as the AD for the Ennis ISD from 1981-91 and as the Brazosport ISD from 1991-00. A 1966 graduate of Greenville High School, Maxey would go on to earn his bachelor's degree from Southwestern University in 1971. He would later earn a master's degree in education from North Texas in 1975 and another master's degree in education administration from Stephen F. Austin in 1981. Maxey and his wife Ellen, who live in Meyerland, have five children: Kari, Mindi, Chip, Mark and Jim. They also have five grandchildren: Kolten and Kyle Bergeron, Orion Maxey and Austin and Corbin Holland.
