CAPE COD, Mass. - University of Houston infielder Hyung Cho was recently named to the 2003 Cape Cod Baseball League All-League Team after ranking among the league leaders in hitting.
Cho, who was one of only seven players to hit higher than .300 for the entire season in the wooden-bat summer league for the nation's top collegiate players, was named to the postseason squad at second base. In 35 games, the Toronto, Canada, native batted .336 (fourth in the league) with four home runs and 22 RBIs.
He was not the only Cougar player to earn Cape Cod League honors this season. Junior pitcher Garrett Mock was named the Eastern Division Most Valuable Player during the league's 41st All-Star Game in late July after allowing only one hit with a strikeout and inducing a ground-ball double play.
Both Cho and Mock return to Houston next week for the beginning of the fall semester on Aug. 25.
Cho was joined on the All-League Team by first baseman Joey Metropoulos (USC) of the Falmouth Commodores, who hit .243 with a league-leading 11 homers and .493 slugging percentage along with 21 RBI; shortstop Ryan Klosterman (Vanderbilt) of the Chatham A's, who hit .279 with four homers and 15 RBI; and third baseman Warner Jones (Vanderbilt) of the Wareham Gatemen, who finished third in league batting average at .344 with one homer and 12 RBI. Also named as an All-Star infielder was Playoff MVP Cesar Nicolas (Vanderbilt), who hit 243 with five homers and a league-leading 28 RBI.
The outfielders include Holt, Sam Fuld (Stanford) of the Hyannis Mets, who finished second with a .361 batting average with one homer, 14 RBI and a league-leading .450 on-base percentage.; 10th Player Award winner Justin Maxwell (Maryland) of the Bourne Braves, who hit .307 with two homers and 17 RBI and Eric Nielsen (UNLV) of the Cotuit Kettleers, who finished fifth with a .333 batting average, along with two homers and 23 RBI.
The All-League catcher is Curtis Thigpen (Texas) of the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox, who hit .280 with 13 RBI and the designated hitter is teammate Sean Gamble (Auburn) of the Red Sox, who finished sixth in the league with a .319 batting avg., along with one homer and seven RBI.
Beattie is joined on the CCBL All-League pitching staff by starter Jeremy Sowers (Vanderbilt) of the Wareham Gateman, who posted a 4-3 record with a 1.20 ERA and 64 K's and relievers Jarrett Santos (North Carolina/Greensboro) of the Brewster Whitecaps, who posted a league leading 11 saves and 23 appearances along with a 1.42 ERA and Zane Carlson (Baylor) of the Chatham A's, who registered 10 saves. Carlson is the leagues all-time saves leader with 34.
League batting champion and MVP J.C. Holt of the Brewster Whitecaps and top pitcher Eric Beattie of the Bourne Braves head the list of the 2003 CCBL All-League Team, selected by the League's field managers.
Holt (LSU) led the Cape League with a robust .388 batting average along with one homer and nine RBI, while the hard-throwing Beattie (Tampa) posted a 4-0 record with a league-leading 0.39 ERA (second-best all-time), along with 51 strikeouts and just six walks.
