UH Volleyball Defeats Southeastern Louisiana and Lamar

BEAUMONT, Texas - The University of Houston volleyball team is off to its best start in 14 years, as it defeated Southeastern Louisiana and Lamar to win the 2002 Lamar/Hilton Cardinal Classic. Houston's outside hitters Jenny Tanneberger and Jane Anne Karasek earned all-tournament team honors.
The Cougars, who posted a 16-11 record last year, lost their first game to Southeastern Louisiana 29-31, but came back to win the next three 30-17, 30-28 and 30-24, to win the match. As a team, UH racked up a .259 hitting percentage against the Lions in the teams' first-ever meeting.
Seven hours later, UH defeated host Lamar in three matches, 30-28, 30-27,and 30-20, for the tournament title. The Cougars now lead the series record 37-20-1.
Senior Jenny Tanneberger continued to lead the Cougar offense with 35 kills on the day, posting 25 against Southeastern Louisiana for a .309 hitting percentage, and 10 against Lamar. Tanneberger, a 2002 All-Conference USA Preseason Team selection, also added a total 14 digs and seven solo blocks in the efforts.
Houston native and Syracuse transfer Laura Koster added 14 kills and nine digs against the Lions and eight kills in the Lamar contest. Outside hitter Jane Anne Karasek was strong on both sides of the ball, adding 15 kills and 18 digs in the first match and 20 kills and five digs in the second. She also led all scorers with a .415 hitting percentage against Lamar. Veteran Loure Dews contributed 12 kills against the Lions and led the team with a .320 hitting percentage in that match.
Donna Sellen handled the Cougars' setting duties, accounting for 64 assists against Southeastern Louisiana and 42 against Lamar. Sellen also contributed six kills and 21 digs on the day. Freshman libero Jaci Gonzalez again led the Cougar defense with 19 digs against Southeastern Louisiana and 16 in the Lamar contest. Newcomer Ali Roberts and setter Mirela Vasconcellos also contributed to the Cougar defensive force, posting 20 and 30 digs on the day, respectively.
The Cougars will travel across town later this week for the Crown Plaza/Rice Invitational at Autry Court in Houston. UH will face TCU on Friday, September 6, and Louisiana-Lafayette and host Rice on Saturday, September 7.
