Cougars Lose to Cardinals in Home Opener

HOUSTON, Texas - The University of Houston volleyball team was defeated by Lamar 3-0 tonight in its home opener at Hofheinz Pavilion despite. The loss came after a 3-0 Cougar victory over the Cardinals (4-3) in Beaumont, Texas, earlier this season.
The Cardinals, who posted a 26-5 overall record last year, defeated UH 30-27, 30-23, 30-27, in the teams' 59th meeting. The Cougars (7-1, 0-0) lead the all-time series 37-21-1.
Senior Jenny Tanneberger, who was just named Conference USA Player of the Week, led the Cougar offense with 14 kills and three blocks. Tanneberger, also a 2002 All-C-USA Preseason selection, added three service aces and three digs in the effort.
Houston native and Syracuse transfer Laura Koster added 10 kills and nine digs against Lamar. Freshman libero Jaci Gonzalez led the Cougar defense with 12 digs while setter Donna Sellen added 32 assists and 7 digs.
The Cougars posted a .145 hitting percentage, their lowest this season, and totaled only 40 kills in three matches. Thirteen Cardinal points came from Cougar service errors.
The Cougars will travel Friday to Gainesville, Florida, for the Campus USC Credit Union Invitational where they will meet reigning national champion Stanford at 4 p.m. The squad will then battle host No. 6 Florida or Ohio Saturday, September 14 at 12:30 or 2:30 p.m.
Hofheinz Pavilion will see volleyball action again on Friday, October 4, when UH hosts conference rival Tulane at 7:30 p.m.
