HOUSTON - University of Houston baseball head coach Rayner Noble agreed to a five-year contract extension, UH director of athletics Dave Maggard announced Tuesday.
Noble, who has been at the helm of the Cougar Baseball program since 1995, will receive an increase in his base salary from $70,000 to $120,000. In addition, his salary could jump to $175,000 with incentives, such as Coach of the Year honors and NCAA Regional, Super Regional and College World Series appearances.
"This shows the University of Houston's commitment to the baseball program and their faith in me as a baseball coach," Noble said.
With the record that Noble has compiled during his coaching tenure, Maggard said the contract extension was deserving.
"This is in recognition of the outstanding job that Rayner has done at the University of Houston," Maggard said. "We want him to continue to build the baseball program."
In eight seasons as the head coach at his alma mater, Noble has compiled a 294-194 record with five NCAA Regional appearances, including four straight entering the 2003 season. With his team's win over Baylor in late May, Noble became UH's third winningest coach and should earn his 300th career victory early in 2003.
A year ago, Noble guided the Cougars to one of the program's all-time finest seasons. The Cougars tied a school record with 48 wins and advanced to the NCAA Super Regional for the second time in the last three seasons. In addition, the Cougars captured their third Conference USA regular-season crown in the last four seasons.
Noble is the only coach in Conference USA history to guide his team to a first- or second-place finish in the league standings every season as a member of C-USA.
