The University of Houston women's soccer team opened up Conference USA play by taking on the undefeated (5-0-0) Charlotte 49ers in Robertson Stadium, and after a double-overtime battle, the game ended in a 2-2 tie.
Charlotte struck first in the game in the sixth minute on a corner kick from Jennie Leeder which was headed into the goal by Mikel Casey.
Houston freshman Sara Hemmer tied the match on an assist from fellow freshman Kelly Golden in 29th minute.
With the score tied 1-1 in the second half, Charlotte once again took the lead in the 79th minute when Casey took a pass from Tiffany Ross and scooted it past Houston goalie Erin Ferguson.
Less than six minutes left in regulation, the Cougars once again tied the game led by senior Ashley Fortenberry's corner kick. Fortenberry kicked the ball to Nicole Aubuchon, who then handed it to Golden for the score.
In the two overtimes, both teams battled and had many opportunities -- Charlotte with five shots on goal and Houston with three -- but each goalie stopped the shots to hold of the opponent.
The tie maintains Houston's current seven-game home win streak dating back to last season, which is the second-longest home winning streak in school history behind the 11-game home streak from 1998-99.
With the tie, the Cougars season record now rests at 3-2-1. They continue this current four-game home stand against the visiting Louisville Cardinals on Sunday, Sept. 22, at Robertson Stadium with kick-off slated for a 12:00 p.m.
