Tampa, Florida - In undoubtebly the hardest fought game of the year, the Houston Cougars women's soccer team met the Bulls of South Florida in Tampa on Sunday. The game was tied at the end of regulation and the ladies played two overtimes in this Conference USA matchup. The final score Houston 2, South Florida 1. The Cougars record has risen to 3-8-1 and the Bulls are now 4-7-2 and 1-4 in Conference play.
The Cougars took the lead in the first half. After a barrage of shots, Houston's Laura Repp, the lone goal scorer for the Cougars in the past five games, caught a rebounded shot off of the Bulls' goalie Valerie Wetzel into the net for the score. The goal was recorded as unassisted, but the first rebounded shot was by Anne Gasser leading to the score. The score at the half was Houston 1, South Florida 0.
The Bulls decided to come back late in the second at the 82:30 minute mark. South Florida's Stine Hagh crossed the ball to teammate Kim Martins shooting into an open goal for the score. The score was now tied 1-1 with less than ten minutes left to go in the game. At the end of regulation the score remained 1-1. Houston began their first overtime period since the first game of the year against the Army Black Knights.
Both teams could not score in the first overtime and the game moved into the second overtime with the score 1-1. In the 112:07 minute of play, the Cougar's Jennifer Allen was taken down by USF's Rachel Thjomoe, who was given a yellow for unsportsman-like play. This event set up Houston's Ashley Fortenberry on a free kick right outside the penalty box, who looped one in for the score, her first of the year and her seventh career goal.
The Cougars will be back in action at home this Friday and will take on the Memphis Tigers at 7:00pm at Robertson stadium.
