Cross Country Squads Place Second at Aggie Opener

Henok Hagos, Cadence Patterson lead Houston to second place team finishes
BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The University of Houston men's and women's cross country teams opened the 2026 season with runner-up finishes at the Aggie Opener on Friday at the Watts Cross Country Course.Â

The women's squad placed second with 42 points in the 2-mile race and the men finished second with 38 points in the 5k.

Junior Cadence Patterson paced the women with a fifth place individual finish in 10:51.8. Junior Addison Hite followed in sixth place in 10:57.4 while junior Lily Campos finished in 11:11.3 for 8th place. Junior AnnClaire Cop recorded a 10th-place finish in 11:15.7 and junior Julia Shimel rounded out the team's top five in 13th place with a time of 11:18.7.

Senior Henok Hagos led the men with a second-place individual finish in 15:21.1. Senior Jack Boyd finished fourth overall in 15:20.4, followed by senior David Soto in sixth at 15:26.5. Junior Caden Thurman placed ninth with a time of 15:35.3, while junior Remay Abraha completed the team's top five in 17th place, crossing the finish line in 16:03.8.

The Cougars return to College Station next Friday for the Texas A&M Invitational. The men will compete at 8 am with the 8k while the women run the 5k at 8:35 am.
