Director of Golf Jonathan Dismuke to be inaugural Mike Booker Men’s Golf Head Coach after endowment
HOUSTON – The University of University and its Athletics Department have announced the endowment of the Men's Golf Head Coach position in honor of letterwinner and All-American Mike Booker, Vice President for Athletics Eddie Nuñez and Director of Golf Jonathan Dismuke announced Thursday.Dismuke, who is now in his 17th season with the Cougars, will serve as the inaugural Mike Booker Men's Golf Head Coach.
Booker and his wife, Pat, were recognized for their generosity during Houston Men's Basketball game inside Fertitta Center on Wednesday night.
Funds from the endowment will be used at the coaching staff's direction for expenses not included in the program's annual budget.
"We are extremely grateful for the generosity of Pat and Mike Booker and their family," Houston Vice President for Athletics Eddie Nuñez said. "As a former Men's Golf student-athlete, Mike helped build the historic tradition of that program. Today, his and Pat's support – and not just financially – for Cougar Athletics and for the Houston Men's Golf program is unrivaled, and we appreciate their contributions which will help our student-athletes compete for championships year after year."
"This gift is really about me paying it back. The University of Houston and its Golf program made me into the golfer I am and the man I became. This is a great way to pay it forward to pay back all that I received in a small way," Booker said. "It will help keep our players sharp during the summer months and ready to go when school starts and the fall season begins every year."
"Our program is incredibly grateful to Pat and Mike Booker for their generous support of our student-athletes. The Bookers' commitment to excellence and belief in the mission of Project 17 directly strengthens our ability to compete at the highest level while developing young men of character both on and off the course," Dismuke said.
Thursday's announcement was only the latest act of generosity from the Bookers to Houston Golf.
In 2015, he and Pat made a donation for the construction of the Mike and Pat Booker Short Game Facility at Golf Club of Houston – home of Houston Men's and Women's Golf – in Humble, Texas.
The new facility converted an open area into two greens, covering 12,000 square feet, with eight practice bunkers surrounding the greens. The grass around the greens will be cut to different heights, giving team members the opportunities to practice a variety of different shots.
