Men’s Golf Finishes Play at Big 12 Championship

Cougars post best team score in Wednesday’s Final Round; Senior Hudson Weibel ties for 14th to lead
HUTCHINSON, Kan. – The University of Houston Men's Golf program saved its best for last during the Final Round of the Big 12 Championship presented by Allstate at Prairie Dunes Country Club on Wednesday afternoon.
Houston posted its lowest team score of the three-day, 72-hole event with a total of 284 Wednesday and moved into 14th with a score of 1,161 on the 6,966-yard, par-70 course. The tournament featured nine of the nation's Top-50 programs.
Junior Chi Chen Chen posted the Cougars' low round of the day with a 1-under 69 and tied for 51st at 291. After starting the Final Round with seven straight pars, the Taiwan native posted birdies in two of next four holes.
Senior Hudson Weibel finished with a score of 282 to tie for 14th and lead the Cougars. It was the Dallas native's team-leading fifth Top-15 finish of the season.
Junior Grant Doggett tied for 66th at 297 while sophomore Hsuan-Yi-Chen – who was making his Big 12 Championship debut – finished 71st at 305. Freshman Jayk Altic, who joined Hsuan-Yi-Chen in making his inaugural postseason appearance, sat out the Final Round and tied for 76th at +18.
Senior Bryant Hiskey II joined the Cougar lineup as a substitute on Wednesday and posted a 71. He finished 84th with his one-round total.
#5 Oklahoma State captured the team championship with a score of 10-under 1,110 to finish eight shots ahead of #20 Arizona. #36 TCU (1,119), #6 Texas Tech (1,129), #38 Kansas (1,130), #34 Utah (1,135), #23 BYU (1,138), Baylor (1,138), #10 Arizona State (1,141) and UCF (1,143) rounded out the Top 10 teams.
Oklahoma State's Preston Stout claimed medalist honors with a score of 11-under 269. BYU's Kihei Akina finished second at 272 while Utah's Sergio Jimenz finished third at 273.

Following the Big 12 Championship presented by Allstate, the Cougars will learn their postseason fate during the NCAA Selection Show, set to air at 1 p.m., May 6, on Golf Channel. Houston looks to compete in NCAA Regional play for the sixth consecutive season.
NCAA Regionals play will be held May 18-20 at six sites across the country. Those venues include: University of Georgia Golf Course (Athens, Ga.; hosted by Georgia); Bermuda Run Country Club (Bermuda Run, N.C., hosted by Wake Forest); Traditions Club (Bryan, Texas; hosted by Texas A&M); Ohio State Golf Club (Columbus, Ohio; hosted by Ohio State); Trysting Tree Golf Club (Corvallis, Ore., hosted by Oregon State) and Chin Southern Dunes (Maricopa, Ariz.; hosted by Arizona State)
