
PREVIEW: Five Cougars Prepared for 2025 USATF Outdoor Championships

Championships begin Thursday and conclude Sunday
EUGENE, Ore. – Five Cougars are set to take the stage at the 2025 USATF Outdoor Track & Field Championships, beginning Thursday at Hayward Field.
Athletes who finish in the top three of their respective events will represent the United States at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Sept. 13-21.

Houston is represented by two current student-athletes, Trey East III in the 400-meters and Jamar Marshall Jr. in the 110-meter hurdles. Also competing for tickets at the World Championships are former Cougars Brian Barraza in the 5,000-meters and 10,000-meters (2014-18), Trumaine Jefferson in the long jump (2015-19) and De'Vion Wilson in the 110-meter hurdles (2019-24).

East III will make his debut in the 400-meters after meeting the minimum qualifying time at the Big 12 Championship. The senior set a personal best of 45.23 at the NCAA West First Rounds in late May. He also competed at the 2025 NCAA Outdoor Championships, earning Second Team All-America honors in the 4x400-meter relay and honorable mention in the 400-meter.

Marshall Jr. is also set to make his first appearance at the USATF Outdoor Championships in the 110-meter hurdles. The senior secured an automatic qualifying spot with a personal best and school record time of 13.13 to win the Big 12 title. Marshall Jr. earned First Team All-America honors after placing fourth at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore.

Barraza will open action for the former Cougars as he competes in the men's 10,000-meters. The two-time All-American is making his sixth USATF Outdoor Championships appearance after competing in 2018, 2019, 2021, 2022 and 2023.

Jefferson returns to the outdoor championships for the first time since 2019 in the long jump. He qualified for the 2019 World Championships after placing third in the event.

Wilson is back at Hayward Field to compete in the 110-meter hurdles following appearances in 2022 and 2023. In 2023, he represented Team USA at the Pan American Games, where he earned a silver medal.
