Cougars fall 66-58 against Buffaloes at Big 12 Championship
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – A late fourth-quarter rally was not enough as the University of Houston Women's Basketball concluded the 2024-25 season with a 66-58 loss against (9) Colorado in the First Round of the Big 12 Championship on Wednesday inside T-Mobile Center.
Houston (5-25, 1-17 Big 12) recorded a season-high 16 steals and Colorado (19-11, 9-9 Big 12) had 33 turnovers including 14 in the fourth quarter.
Houston had four scorers in double-figures with graduate guard Laila Blair leading the team with 15 points and six assists. Blair concluded her collegiate career as Houston's second all-time scorer with 1,975 points.
Redshirt sophomore guard Gigi Cooke posted 13 points for her 18th game this season scoring in double-digits. Playing in her hometown of Kansas City, graduate guard Eylia Love posted 11 points and a career-high seven steals. Redshirt senior guard Leilani Augmon rounded out the totals with 10.
Houston and Colorado kept things close in the first, but two consecutive 3-pointers helped the Buffaloes secure a 19-12 lead.
The Buffaloes jumped out to a 15-point lead in the second as the Cougars were unable to score for nearly eight minutes. Blair ended the drought to spark an 8-2 Houston run to trail 29-20 at the half.
A 3-pointer by Cooke and five points by Love helped the Cougars get within six, but Colorado used a 9-0 spurt to regain its 15-point lead. A trip to the free throw line sent the Buffaloes to the fourth with a 49-32 lead.
Colorado jumped out to an 18-point lead, but the Houston fight wasn't over. Houston used a 15-4 run with eight points from Augmon to trim the deficit down to seven. A four-point play by Blair once again reduced the deficit to five with 25 seconds left. The Buffaloes were able to advance to the Second Round as they scored three final free throws.
