
Women’s Basketball Drops Road Battle Against Iowa State

Cougars fall in 64-53 decision against Cyclones
AMES, Iowa – University of Houston Women's basketball team dropped a 64-53 road battle to Iowa State on Wednesday evening inside Hilton Coliseum.
The Cougars (5-21, 1-14 Big 12) and the Cyclones (19-9, 10-5 Big 12) kept it close in the opening quarter as graduate guard Laila Blair scored seven of her 13 points in the frame. Iowa State found success behind the 3-point line as it scored 12 of its 18 points from beyond the arc.
The Cyclones opened the second period with a 10-0 run to jump out to a 14-point lead. After being unable to score for the first four minutes, Blair ended the scoring drought for the Cougars with five straight points of her own. Houston trailed 42-27 at the intermission.
Houston opened the second half strong using a 7-0 run to trim the deficit to 10. Blair picked up her fourth foul at the 5:02 mark in the third quarter and Iowa State scored seven straight points of its own. The Cyclones led 54-39 heading into the final frame.
Iowa State's lead ballooned to 19, but the Cougars used a 9-2 run to trim the deficit to 12. Redshirt sophomore guard Gigi Cooke scored seven of her 13 points in the final 10 minutes, but the Cyclones defended home turf as they took a 64-53 victory to reach 10 conference wins.
