Head Coach David Rehr earns 650th career win as Cougars begin league play with straight-set victory
MANHATTAN, Kansas – The University of Houston Volleyball team collected its first Big 12 Conference win with a road sweep of Kansas State inside Morgan Family Arena on Wednesday night.
Houston (6-5, 1-0 Big 12) used its fourth sweep of the year to claim a win in its league opener behind double-doubles from graduates Angela Grieve (team-leading 15 kills, 10 digs) and Annie Cooke (19 assists, 10 digs). Grieve now has a team-leading four double-doubles on the year while Cooke clinched her 26th career feat.
The win earned Head Coach David Rehr his 650th career victory and 109th with the Cougars. He became the fastest coach in the NCAA Era to 100 wins last season with a 3-0 win over Oklahoma on Nov. 10, 2023.
Graduate libero Kate Georgiades extended her streak of double-digit dig performances with team-leading 12 in the match while senior outside hitter Katie Corelli secured her 23rd career double-digit kill tally with 12.
The Cougars started the match strong, winning the first four points to take an early lead in the first set. Kansas State (2-8, 0-1 Big 12) fought back, tying the frame at 11-11 before earning a 20-17 lead later in the set. The Cougars wouldn't go quietly, staging a late comeback to even the set at 23-23 and forcing extras to win the set, 27-25.
Grieve recorded six digs and two blocks along with five kills to lead Houston in the opening frame.
The second set remained close in the early stages, with the Wildcats earning a one-point lead after 15 points. A 7-0 run fueled by kills from redshirt junior Barakat Rahmon, junior Avery Shimaitis and Grieve put Houston up 18-13, and the Cougars continued to hold the advantage through the end, winning the second, 25-20.
Another close set ensued in the third. Remaining tied after 10 points, Houston and Kansas State would battle to 12 ties throughout the set as neither team earned a sizable edge until a 4-1 Cougar stretch put Houston up by four. The Wildcats nearly fought back to even the set, but Houston shut the door on a comeback, clinching the sweep with a 25-23 win in the final frame.
