Georgiades reaches 2,500 career digs as Cougars suffer tough loss to Horned Frogs
FORT WORTH, Texas – Graduate libero Kate Georgiades used a stellar 36 dig performance to surpass 2,500 digs in her career, however the University of Houston Volleyball team fell after a surge from #22 TCU to win in five sets at Schollmaier Arena on Wednesday night.
Georgiades became one of 27 players to reach the 2,500 milestone in Division I volleyball and the only player to do it while at a Big 12 Conference school. The College Station, Texas, native now has 2,521 collegiate digs, the 25th most by an NCAA Division I libero.
The 36 digs from Georgiades are the second time this season she's tallied the mark. It's also her ninth career 30-plus dig effort and third of the season.
Houston (11-14, 6-9 Big 12) had three players record double doubles in the match, the third time this season three or more Cougars have completed the feat. Senior Julianna Dalton posted her second career double-double with 11 kills and 10 digs. The Parker, Colo., native hit .303 in the match (11-1-33), leading Cougars with more than 10 attempts. Graduate Angela Grieve (16 kills, 14 digs) and graduate Annie Cooke (42 assists, 11 digs) also completed the effort for their 12th and 33rd of their career, respectively.
Senior Katie Corelli continued to shine on the outside, posting her 17th double-digit kill effort of the season while hitting .282 in the match. Redshirt sophomore Ella Wendel recorded a career-high nine kills and added three blocks.
TCU (18-7, 10-5 Big 12) used a 3-0 run to jump out to an early 7-4 lead in the first set. A 4-0 run from the Cougars narrowed the gap to 12-11 before using a 3-0 run later to take a 16-15 lead. Houston went on to extend its lead to four at 23-19, however the Horned Frogs won five consecutive points to take the edge and set up set point. Houston fought off the threat, using kills from Corelli and redshirt junior Barakat Rahmon as well as an ace from Grieve to clinch a 27-25 win in the opening set.
The Horned Frogs again claimed an early advantage in the second, winning six of the first 10 points. Houston evened the score at 7-all, but TCU didn't fully relinquish the lead, continuing to hold the edge until a 3-0 Cougar run gave Houston a 22-21 lead. The Horned Frogs again clawed back and forced a set point, but Houston surged to negate the point and finished a 26-24 set win with a 4-0 run.
Houston maintained the momentum going into the third, winning six of the first seven points. The Cougars continued to lead until TCU evened the set at 13-13 before a 6-3 stretch for the Horned Frogs forced a Houston timeout at 19-16. Ultimately, TCU continued to control the frame late, claiming a 25-18 victory.
The energy remained on TCU's half of the court into the fourth. The Horned Frogs won nine consecutive points to secure a 12-3 lead, never looking back as they won the fourth, 25-14, to force a decisive fifth set.
While Houston jumped out to an 8-5 lead before the teams switched sides, another lengthy TCU rally evened the set at 12-12 and pushed the frame to a match point at 14-12. A 3-0 run for Houston nearly clinched the upset win, but TCU responded by winning four of the next five points to take the fifth, 18-16, and the match, 3-2.
