Houston forces extra points in back-to-back sets but falls to #24
HOUSTON – The University of Houston Volleyball team fought against its eighth ranked opponent of the year, but ultimately fell to #24 BYU on Saturday afternoon at Fertitta Center.
Â
Graduate outside hitter Angela Grieve led the way for Houston (11-13, 6-8 Big 12), tallying 10 kills and 11 digs for her 20th career double-double. It also marked her 20th match this season with double-digit kills and 25th career match with double-digit digs.Â
Â
Graduate libero Kate Georgiades continued her streak of matches with 10-or-more digs, bringing the total to 28 as she tallied a match-best 14 against BYU (16-8, 9-5 Big 12).
Â
While the first set remained close early, BYU used a 4-0 run around the media timeout to take a 16-10 edge. Another 5-0 run later in the frame clinched the opener for BYU as they won the set, 25-16.
Â
BYU kept the momentum early in the second. BYU was the first to reach double-digit points then used a 3-0 run to force a Houston timeout at 14-8. Following a second Houston pause at 17-11, Houston used a 6-2 run to shrink its deficit to 21-19. Another 3-0 run later, Houston evened the set at 22-22 before additional ties at 23-23, 24-24, 25-25, 26-26 and 27-27 before BYU used back-to-back kills from Elli Mortensen and Brielle Kemavor to win the frame in extra points.Â
Â
The third set again remained close throughout. While the second set featured 12 tie scores, the third tallied 13. Houston took an early edge, winning six of the first 10 points. BYU rallied back to tie the score at 7-7 before taking a 9-7 advantage. Houston again tied the score at 10-10 which started a deadlock between the two teams, with tie scores resulting every other point until a 3-0 BYU run at 17-17 put the visitors ahead. Houston wouldn't go quietly, tying the frame at 23-23 and 24-24, but BYU put the match away in extra points, 26-24.Â

NOTABLES
·       Graduate setter Annie Cooke played in her 500th career set. She's just one of three players, joining Abbie Jackson (2019-23) and Rachel Tullos (2019-23) to reach the 500 mark.Â
·       Georgiades is 15 digs away from 2,500 in her career. She'd be one of 27 student-athletes to reach the threshold in NCAA Division I history.
Â
UP NEXT
Houston starts a three-game road trip that includes its regular-season road finale. Houston starts at #18 TCU at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, before heading to Waco, Texas, for a 2 p.m., Saturday, tilt against #17 Baylor.
