Houston Falls to #13 Arizona State

Cougars drop Arizona road trip opener in Tempe
TEMPE, Ariz. – The University of Houston Volleyball team fell in straight sets to #13 Arizona State inside Mullett Arena on Wednesday evening.
Senior libero Kate Georgiades tallied her 20th consecutive match with double-digit digs, posting 17 on the night while graduate outside hitter Angela Grieve led the match with 16 kills, her 86th career match with 10-or-more. Graduate setter Annie Cooke earned 17 assists and 10 digs for her 28th career double-double.
Houston (8-8, 3-3 Big 12) and Arizona State (17-2, 6-1 Big 12) went back-and-forth throughout the first set. Remaining tied after 12 points, a 4-1 run gave the Cougars the lead. The Sun Devils retied the set at 16-all, claiming the momentum as they claimed a 22-19 edge. Houston fought back with a 4-1 stretch to even the score again, forcing extras as the score remained tied at 24-24. Arizona State went on to win back-to-back points to claim the first, 26-24.
The second set remained close early. Splitting the first eight serves, Arizona State used a 4-1 stretch to claim the lead. While the Sun Devils never ceded their advantage, Houston didn't allow the deficit to grow larger than four as Arizona State took the set, 25-21.
The Sun Devils quickly closed the door in the third. Leading 9-6 after 15 points, Arizona State cruised throughout the frame to claim the set, 25-16, and the match, 3-0.
NOTABLES
· Cooke moved into sole possession of ninth on Houston's career matches played list with her 128th. She also moved into a tie for eighth on Houston's career sets played list with 472.
· Redshirt senior setter Rebecca Rocassin reached 2,500 career assists with 13 in the match.
· Houston out-blocked Arizona State, 6.0-5.0.
